Gilbert has been a regular tutor of blacksmithing at BADCAP’s Arts in the Olives Festivals for many years. He has had years of teaching experience and is looking forward to returning to Arts in the Olives 2022.

PRICE: $100 PER DAY (WORKSHOP) + $15 MATERIALS (paid on the day)

DETAILS:

Experience a hands on/get dirty experience of forging hot iron.

Learn new skills and take home a useful and decorative metal object of your own creation – from basic materials, with basic equipment. Fun and informative!

Workshops typically start with a skill building/warm up project (drive hook) after which participants make something of their own design and according to their skill/ability level. Gilbert has a pallet of beginner projects to choose from if you find yourself with a creative block. These are traditional designs such as fire pokers, fire rakes, bread/marshmallow toasting forks, door knockers, letter openers and more hooks.

Your own achievable designs are welcome, especially if you have design or making experience.

WHAT TO BRING : Safety first!

Please bring comfortable safety glasses – sunnies not acceptable. Ear plugs are recommended and leather (no nylon) rigger type gloves optional. If you have a Ball Pein Hammer of sufficiently light weight that you could swing it all day without getting tennis elbow, please bring that. Otherwise, I have spares. We use 100 year old forge blowers cranked by hand and portable charcoal forges. This workshop can run without electricity – but be warned you will be pleasantly tired by the afternoon.
